1. A preposition shows a relationship between its object and other words in a sentence.
2. The preposition may be in the form of one word such as :
- in, on at, by, for, inside, outside, behind, under, against, underneath, ect.
and may in the form of phrase that functions as one unit such as :
- in front of, in back of, by way of, at the top of, at the bottom of, at the head of, etc.
3. Some of prepositions express :place or position, direction, time, manner, and agent.
Examples :
1. The book is ON the desk. (place or position)
2. The boy ran TOWARD the house. (direction)
3. The man arrived AT ten o’clock. (time)
4. Mr. Brown travels BY bus. (manner)
5. The book was written BY La Rose. (agent)
4. A preposition + an object forms PHRASE. It is called Prepositional Phrase.
The Prepositional Phrase usually functions as a modifier (adjective or adverb).
Examples :
1. The report of the meeting was read.
(The prepositional Phrase “of the meeting” modifies “ the report” – adjective)
2. We go to class at ten o’clock.
(The prepositional Phrase “at ten o’clock” modifies “go to class” – adverb)
